KUALA LUMPUR:Six men, including one said to be a Datuk, are being investigated for Ah Long-related activities with overseas connections, said police.
They are said to be “big sharks” of a syndicate believed to have been operating for some time.
The men, aged between 30 and 56 years, were also suspected of having links with illegal money-lending syndicates in neighbouring countries.
It is learnt the Datuk and five others were arrested in raids in Johor and Selangor.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan refused to comment, adding that a statement was expected to be released by the Home Minister soon.
Federal Criminal Investigations Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said Malaysian police were working closely with authorities in neighbouring countries.
Comm Bakri is likely to head
a special task force on the syndicate.
“We can effectively cripple the activities of this syndicate, from the top ‘management’ down soon,” he said after witnessing the convocation ceremony of probationary inspectors at the Kuala Lumpur police training centre yesterday.
Comm Bakri declined to say if the Datuk was a politician.
He added police were investigating if the six men were part of the notorious K9 Crystal Gems Enterprise who had locked up, chained and beaten up debtors who had failed to settle their loans.
